The free and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>open source blogging platforms<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ll talk about are designed with the needs of developers in mind, and not their moms\u2019 (unless she likes to code too).<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/hexo.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hexo<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hexo.io\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.sixrevisions.com\/0415-01_open_source_blog_hexo.jpg?resize=550%2C323\" alt=\"Hexo\" width=\"550\" height=\"323\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hexo is a blogging platform powered by Node.js (it says so right there in the site\u2019s tagline).<\/p>\n<p>Its hacker-friendly features include native support for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.github.com\/articles\/github-flavored-markdown\" target=\"_blank\">GitHub Flavored Markdown<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(GMF) as well as templating and extensibility capabilities using EJS, Swig and Stylus.<\/p>\n<p>Installing Hexo will take you but a few seconds, assuming you already have<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npmjs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">npm<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>set up and ready to go. Boom:<\/p>\n<pre>$ npm install hexo -g<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Fun tangential fact:<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;npm&#8221; doesn\u2019t stand for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Node packaged modules<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>or<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Node Package Manager.<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s a recursive acronym like PHP. Hugo is a static site generator similar to Jekyll. I came across it when I was looking for an alternative to Jekyll on<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/staticgen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/staticgen.com<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>. It\u2019s been great to work with. It is the easiest software to install I\u2019ve ever used\u2026 literally download and run, I love that I don\u2019t need to install an entire package manager just to use it. And don\u2019t get me started on how fast it is.. it\u2019s night and day faster compared to Jekyll. I used to take coffee breaks every time I had to generate my site, now it\u2019s done before I can even refresh the browser.
